Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
We don’t actually have any disabled person in our immediate family but we do have a Niece who is disabled and she is being cared for by her Father who also holds down a full time job. He has no life for himself, but he does have help in some way but it’s never enough.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, People with disability can choose who comes into their home, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, Flexible in-home/outside home respite, Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
To be disabled in any way would be horrific and everyone involved should have as much help and support as possible in every way and this has been put into the too hard basket for far too long . It is now time to act and leave no stone unturned.
Not one of us knows when and if we could end up disabled and we should never think, “it won’t happen to me”.
