Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My 14 yr old Son has Cerebral Palsy.When he was young Early Intervention was good,and i had a lot of support. Once he started to go to high school it all stops. Its like he is left to go it alone..i am a sole parent now, and even one private Physio session a week is usually out of my tight budget. I have 2 Jobs,both casual..and recieve no maitenence. There have been times i have gone without food myself to make sure he and his brother can go swimming at the local pool which is great for him.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, Removal of age barriers to services for children
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Education support (technology/services/equipment), Employment support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because it feels like unless you are a welfare con artist or an immigrant/indiginous person you get lost in the system. My Son wont go on Welfare,he will work like all his family and has big dreams of working in Coal Industry like others he admires. Its getting him there thats the hard bit.
