Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I suppose the core responsibility for needs being met gets put onto the parents and with the support services only attending to specific requests from said parents, how on earth does our son who has severe cerebral palsy and cannot communicate his needs, how does he get the best quality of life. Surely if the system is geared to truly come from a person (client) centred approach then he / we / service providers will be receiving more information to more suitably address his needs. Parents sometimes dont have the knowledge/time to know what to ask for , sometimes parents are the last people to truly see their childs needs in a way that would bring about more quality of life. Respite is sometimes not sought out because of lack of trust that service providers are capable of being person centred. The future for our son would be brighter if the responsibility for his needs and goals were looked at from a more focused team approach where we all want what is in his and our best interests. THe team of therapists are only accountable for their particular area, they only address needs that the parents ask for, who besides the parent might offer us a path forward that looks at the bigger picture for us as a family.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, More rights for people with a disability, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
because finally service providers are planning to actually be accountable and meet the needs of their clients, before, the client was the least important person. Person Centred Approach means everything to a parent.
