Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The disability system is disempowering in that it takes so long for any resolution to occur because of the paperwork we go through and the time delays for any funding to come through. There are also few meaningful work opportunities or lifestyle programs for a person with a disability to be engaged in.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Better access to education and work opportunities, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Employment support, Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme will give some hope to the thousands of families impacted by a member with a disability. We will no longer shoulder the huge responsibility of caring for our family members alone, surviving on very little money and often inadequate support. I wish I could tick more than three of the areas in the preceding two categories to show how the NDIS will impact our family and our loved one with a disability.
I fully support the National Disability Insurance Scheme to give us back some dignity and empowerment and to help alleviate our anxiety about what happens to our children when we can no longer care for them.
This Scheme is an absolute necessity for families living with disability.
