Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have three children with Disabilities - the current system does not support them properly each and every year my family has “out of pocket” expenses (and I mean the gap between medicare/Private Health Insurance) totalling over $20,000.00) and that is a good year - the MCHP etc help but now the children are only able access 10 sessions per calander year and they have to be spread between many Alied Health Professionals. And that is before paying for Top Private Health cover to ensure my youngest especially has medical access quickly and comfortably and is able to access the same professionals rather than through the public system where she would probably be dead by now given all the wait times etc. Once past the girls immediate medical issues then there is assistance with community access safely with carers support in the home to mantain a good safe and happy family environment.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Better access to mainstream support and services, People with disability can choose who comes into their home, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Education support (technology/services/equipment), Life-skills, Flexible in-home/outside home respite, Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because I have three children with disabilities and the current system leaves them lacking in basic support they need.
