Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Not enough respite service. My sister in law doesn’t receive enough assistance or support with finding a placement for her daughter in a group home now that her daughter is 22 and my sister in law is 63 and has depression. She has been the sole parent for her for the last 18 years. She works full tiime and her life is a struggle.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Accommodation options, In-home care and domestic assistance, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The current approach is unfair. Disability can effect any person and those who live face an unfair struggle and disadvantage. Our sociaty needs to provide for support and care.
