Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Our Daughter dose not “FIT” into the boxes people want to put her in. We have not received any Financial assistance for our Daughters Special Education, accomondation etc. and now as we are Retired what or who will assist her?
There appears to be no “System” that will just let her stay in our home but have someone check she is OK if we wanted to go away even for just a short time, we do not “FIT” in the Box.
Not every Disabled Person has the same needs and in our case the needs are very minnium, however, we have both been fully emloyed all our lives and contributed fully to the Welfare of all but at times are frustrated that the assistance we can receive for our Family is NIL.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, Accommodation options, Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support any change that will assist all levels of Disabled in our Society. We need to change our attitudes to those who are “Less Needy” then many whose Disability is clearly visible to everyone.
The Jails, Boarding Houses and Nursing Homes have many many residents whose capacity to understand and cope with Society is limited, there Brain damaged at birth is slight but the damage is enough to limit there capacity to completly manage everything that they need to in this Society. Simple things like filling out a form, Knowing that a Financial Body is giving them correct information, Medical Services provided by Persons who understand there level of understanding and ensure they are aware of the outcome of there choices, there are many examples and as Parents our hands are tied by the Laws & Restrications placed on us. If this Scheme in any way addresses the needs of all Disabled People then I am more then willing to Support in what ever way I can, but as far as I have read there is still “No Money allocated for this Scheme” as my Daughter is 41 will she benifit by the Scheme in her life time.
