Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Before his death my son coped with quadriplegia for 25 years. He achieved great things, he received a PhD from Oxford and started a political party (d4d) in South Australia. Living a life with a severe disability is difficult enough but when these difficulties are compounded by the utterly disgraceful management of disability services you cannot begin to imagine the problems that arise. I could write a book about the daily problems that arose, again and again. My son was mentally very strong but I saw so many times the complete despair that would overcome him. Self Managed Funding was his goal so that he could control his daily and I hope that this will become a reality for all disabled people. The NDIS must become a reality, it’s funding must be well thought out and implemented and put into legislation so that it remains a fixture. It is impossible to choose three of the features mentioned below because everyone of them is important.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, People with disability can choose who comes into their home
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Accommodation options, In-home care and domestic assistance, Flexible in home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I think I have given enough reasons in the above statement.
