Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My son broke his neck and become a quadruplegic in his own home (Public Liability does not cover him) He went from from paying off his home and on a good salary to a disability pension and the dissolve of his marriage. He has managed to hang onto his home with the help of family. He is a good man and a tax payer until this accident that could happen to you and yours and in a blink everything changes.
I don’t know if this will help his situation at all but I do know that he deserves to live with dignity. Please give him that much.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with disability can choose who comes into their home, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Employment support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
If my son was injured in a car accident he would have the right to access help. As he had this accident in his own home he has to rely on family.
