Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
At the moment it seems to ‘matter’ where you live to be able to receive support for a person with a disability (and their family). Many people who live in regional and isolated areas seem to be forgotten - we are just as important as urban dwellers. The fact that people who have a disability are ‘judged’ or ‘managed’ on WHAT TYPE or HOW they attained their diability is appalling - life is tough enough already!
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Life-skills, Employment support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
NDIS will finally give people with a disability, and their family & carers, a choice and some power, not to mention more support!! In our particular circumstance, knowing that a baby will go from receiving support through an early intervention program, then continue to be supported throughout childhood and school, the teenage years, young adulthood right through to mature adulthood is amazing - and brings us tears of joys!! Our child’s disability doesn’t just affect him but our whole family and it’s a pretty tough gig!! It has a flow-on effect to our friends, relatives and community support is always needed (physical, mental, emotional …)
