Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My experience has shown the current services available for a persons with a disability or their carers are hard to locate and that it requires extensive research to locate the services that are currently available. This makes it a very daunting process for some people, resulting in the person with the disability missing out on some of the support they require that is currently available.
I believe this could be changed to a single point of contact that can provide details of the services that are currently available will provide the support required and organise contact/appointment for the identified service. I also believe this should also be able to identify where there is a lack of services required or duplication in services being provided and be able to provide the requires support at overall reduced costs.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Better access to mainstream support and services
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, Accommodation options, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I believe this scheme should provide a more equitable service and support across the whole of Australia for persons with a disability as it should enable the provision of same or similar services/facilities no matter which State they may live in.
