Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I can’t really answer this because at the moment my family are not disabled.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Better access to mainstream support and services
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Accommodation options
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS because it is something we want to do as caring humans. A scheme for age pensions and disability support was put forward by Thomas Paine in 1793 as part of his paper, Rights of Man part 2. The idea isn’t new, it has just been a long time coming. While I am not disabled myself, I am mindful of the difficulties our disabled citizens face every day and am humbled by their patience and fortitude, and particularly by their concern for others, both disabled and able.
