Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The disability system does not cater to all individuals with additional needs in it current state. In particular, my son has Autism, was diagnosed a month before his 7th birthday and did not qualify for any assistance packages etc.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Better access to mainstream support and services, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support, Removal of age barriers to services for children
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Education support (technology/services/equipment), Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS as it will make a huge difference to people living with disabilities and those that live with them, care for them, educate and employ them. I believe in equality for all, regardless of race, gender, sex, history, and Ability.
Providing care, education and therapy for our son is expensive and we are relatively low needs in terms of support compared to many others. I shudder to think of the exhorbitant costs faced by many families and the services denied to many because of those costs.
