Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
There is not enough specific support for my family with regard to our family members needs. Constantly shuffled from doctor to doctor with no-one actually taking steps forward for appropriate treatment or even knowing who or where to refer my family. It feels like no knows and no one is willing to be accountable for taking care. I do not know any other job or career where someone who is employed in a position to do a particular job, can continue without actually performing that job and still be paid and not fired. This affects the entire family not just the person requiring the support. The whole family unit is affected.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because I have directly seen the difference that appropriate support can have on a family. Conversely, I can also see the damage and affect it has on the entire family, when relevant support is not available for the member of the family who needs it. This affect naturally feeds out and spills over into the local community as parents miss work, become further stressed/frustrated..other family members and friends try to take up the slack and thus affect their sphere of influence as it takes a toll on them. This process continues spiralling until one of two things happen:
