Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My Daughter is 37, her parents 69 and 65 respectively. Until now the parents had been unable to provide future accommodation therefore the family situation and health(particularly Mentally) was stressed to the Max. Emergency respite has and is virtually non-existant (1-2 days ,2hrs/day ,weekly) instead of full emergency respite. Services have been evolving for the past 30 yrs`.Until a “ package “ and a definite Plan for each individual is put in place without moving the “Goal Posts” , satisfactory outcomes for individuals will not be met. My daughters parents have always been involved in Honourary positions (Hands-on) to assist Services.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Life-skills, Accommodation options, Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because this is another “Idea” that may or may not work. The “Plan” is what is needed.
