Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The current system does not give dignity and respect to people with disabilities. It does not support them as individuals, in being able to achieve an education, a job, and contribution to their community without an unmeritted amount of struggle and repeated applications for assistance and support with long delays. The safety and security of individuals with disabilities is at risk with the present system. The long delays experienced when asking for genuine and urgent help is a disgrace. Every Australian deserves the right to a ‘fair go’. We are not second class citizens, everyone of us Aussies counts in this life.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Education support (technology/services/equipment), Support for families and carers, Accommodation options, Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support this scheme because life is difficult enough for people with disabilities, and the cur.rent scheme just makes living and surviving a daily struggle for most. EVERY Australian deserves a ‘fair go’ and the right to dignity and respect should be available to EVERY Australian.
I agree for my submission to be made public
