Easier access to therapy for child with disability

From: To: Community Affairs, Committee (SEN); Subject: sub952Submission to the Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012 Date: Thursday, 17 January 2013 2:47:46 PM

Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing

Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance

Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

We have to wait for early intervention, we cannot access other public services during this waiting period (therapists). Once we have services available we can only access one therapy at a time not multiple. We cannot get full funding to cover the costs of therapists. It’s it difficult to gain access and understanding of the current ECIS system. There is a lot of paperwork and red tape involved in gaining help or therapy. Carers payment is only available to a small percentage of people, mostly on low incomes. Medicare only covers 5 allied health sessions per year but is fully funded in other countries. Generally the government does not provide well for people with disabilities or makes it very difficult to gain any help.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Removal of age barriers to services for children

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

Therapy and allied health services, Education support (technology/services/equipment), Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

We have a child with a disability and would like a better and easier way to access therapy and support for her and our family

I agree for my submission to be made public

Regards,

Ms Cassie Van Diemen
