Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Because we were forced into the most cruel choice of having to relinquish our daughters care after 28 years of caring. We had no choice as the system is so inequitable. Those who come under TAC or the like have every support and no financial stress. Those who suffer their disability from birth have the same challenges but with the added pressure of fighting for every support- be it equipment or carer support. Families crumble and disintergrate under these added pressures. Imagine sending off your daughter to day placement knowing you would not be there to recieve her home and that your only choice was to make her homeless. Then you are abused by the system when they try to force you into making choices that you know are not right or suitable. You are bullied and lies told. You are threatened with the prospect that your daughter has nowhere to go or will be put in unsuitable accomodation if you don’t take her back. HOW CAN YOU GO BACK! Your life is now shattered because you ha ve committed the worst crime against a precious loved one. It is cruel and unjust. is her name and we are the RUSS family. We ask for no handouts - we just needed help we had no more to give and we got nothing except more heartache and pain from what we were forced to do. Please stop this now- no other family should have to ever consider this.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, More rights for people with a disability, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Accommodation options, Flexible in-home/outside home respite, Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It is fair and equitable for all people with disabilites. It will give people hope where there was none. It will offer families support when needed and in the area of their choice. Nothing will takeaway the pain and challenge of caring for a person with a severe disability but it will make it easier and take away some of the exhaustion and perhaps alleviate some of the stresses. IT IS TOO LATE FOR US BUT PLEASE MAKE IT RIGHT FOR OTHERS.
