Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
financial and other practical support for people suffering injuries and other disabilities should not rely on costly legal appeals which many people are unable to sustain or mount; a national scheme will ensure adequate support for people who are justifiably in need. NDIS also helps to reduce unsustainable levels of insurance payment required by some organisations to manage their risk of exposure to claims. Many organisations are forced to close through even if they are delivering services with positive community benefits.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Better access to mainstream support and services, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Recreation and community access, Accommodation options, Flexible in home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
as a wealthy, educated nation it is incumbent on us to provide for those people who, through no fault of their own, need higher levels of support to live independently and participate in everyday life.
