Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The current facilities and access to rehab services is what I consider to be insufficient for clients who are looking at early intervention to provide them with the best possible outcome and ability to contribute into society and live independently.
Many families need to support their own rehab via their own means (which luckily i am currently able to do). I fear that there are many families with less fortunate circumstances who would only be able to offer government funded services (which as I say, are by my reckoning insufficient and prescriptive).
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Access to reliable information about support options
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS as I feel as a community we will benefit from offering better options for those with disability (particularly around health services and rehab).
I have personally experienced the pain and frustration of dealing with therapy provider and multiple organisations around my own son’s rehabilitation.
