Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
For the amount of people in my families that pay their taxes and do not require government assistance it is only fair that when one family member needs extra aide they should be able to access it. If you assist us to look after our disabled member and their family for the future it will also decrease the need for you to have them as fully dependent on complete government aide forever. I also find it far more difficult to get funding because my son is mildly disabled and can only say that a little bit of help goes a long way and may be the difference between independence and DEPENDENCE#. The assistance for employment for mildly disabled is severely lacking in schemes and job networks and a registery of businesses that are prepared to give these young adults a go would be hugely useful in all local government or council offices. Look after the carers and the carers will look after the disabled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Employment support, Accommodation options, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
We have a son with a disability and all we want is for him to have the rights and opportunities to live in our community as a happy, cared for and loved individual. We want to him to feel worthwhile and useful and know that his continuence of care will never be compromised by poor funding and governmental decisions and that our family will be assisted with his ongoing care in the many years to ahead.
