Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
There is no transperancy for costs of services, being in a regional area there is a lack of services to meet the needs of a growing cliental, young people with a disability have to compete with a large number of unemployed already in existance. Lack of respite facilities that could possibly offer flexability or in a lot of cases any respite. Professional services are difficult to access as waiting lists are long, generally only available to very elderly carers or clients in crisis. Transport is another huge issue with availability limited, most bus services cease during school holidays, which of course limit a person in their ability to attend day programs, vocational training and work placement. Another huge problem to be faced is finding safe appropriate housing and again transport and social interaction become enormous issues with a genuine lack of availability. etc etc.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Life-skills, Recreation and community access, Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
My hope is for a better future for all people with a disability to be supported, to have choice, to be safe and not exploited. To just be accepted as a part of the wider community even if the community really dosen’t want to be involved.
