Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My son is disabled and currently receive no services or help from disability queensland even though he is eligible. At times our family struggles due to the effects disability has on us. We have no family that is able to provide us with help or respite. When I ring Commonwealth Carers I am only able to get approx 4 hours per year respite, and even then I have to beg for it. My son has to attend “normal school” as he is too high functioning for special school and this creates conflict with teachers and principles who don’t seem to have a great deal of knowledge in how to school a child with a disability. struggles with school and social life, and often my husband and I are quite depressed. I am currently working part time in order to pay for therapy for , as well as going to university full time, so that I may get a better paying job in order to better support . My husband and I receive virtually no respite and as a consequence, our rela tionship is often strained. Our social lives are non existent, and friends can’t cope with disability. I have rung DSQ to ask for help and have received nothing. Anything would be an improvement on the disability system as currently we receive nothing.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
More opportunities to participate in the community, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, In-home care and domestic assistance, Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The insurance scheme will be accessable to all families, not just a chosen few.
