Concerns regarding son's severe intellectual disability and risk of funding cuts

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 Submission 1241

Hello, I write to express my serious concern regarding the proposed NDIS Futures Generations Bill. I am the sole carer of a 12-year-old boy born with severe disabilities — he is non-verbal, has a severe Intellectual Disability, requires toileting support, and presents with extreme behaviours of concern including aggression. I take great pride in being employed and have a strong work ethic. The only way I am able to remain in the workforce is because NDIS funding supports my son’s care workers. At 174cm, he cannot safely attend mainstream after-school care programs, leaving no viable alternative. I have twice been forced to take my case to tribunal — and twice I have been successfully able to plead our case. On the most recent occasion, it emerged that my son’s diagnosis had been incorrectly recorded on the NDIS system for the past eight years. Against this backdrop, the Minister’s proposed power to cut funding without right of appeal (s 34A), and to make automated decisions that cannot be challenged, is deeply alarming. This legislation would strip Australians of the ability to meaningfully question government decisions — removing the accountability that is fundamental to a fair and democratic system. The concentration of unchecked ministerial power is, terrifyingly Trumpian in character. Without adequate NDIS funding, I will not be able to continue caring for my son at home. As a mother, this is not a hypothetical fear — it is keeping me awake at night and eroding my mental resilience. Research led by Marsha Mailick Seltzer at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Waisman Center found that parents of autistic children exhibit cortisol stress-hormone patterns comparable to those seen in combat soldiers. These proposed amendments will only deepen that burden. I urge you to oppose this legislation unless it is amended. Kind regards,
