My main concern about this Bill is:

This bill threatens to take autonomy and dignity away from disabled people by withdrawing choice of supports, pressure on response times from participants and lack of flexibility regarding plans.

This Bill may affect me / people I support because:

       I work with clients experiencing complex trauma everyday. I work in a drop-in
  community centre and am often the point of contact for our patrons. The NDIS
  has allowed for dignity of services for these community members who experience
  low communication abilities, daily distress, intellectual and physical disabilities.
 The changes to the bill around participant engagement would be devastating to
  these patrons who are just trying to survive.

  Automated systems will, at best, be frustrating and at worst, cause life altering
 damage to participants. Human review is vital. NDIS participants are human
  beings who should be given the dignity of human interaction and understanding
   within their plan reviews.

  Formal processes around supports can force NDIS participants to receive care
  from strangers. This can lead to physical and emotional harm of the participant.
  Imagine having your body touched and moved and bathed and clothed by a

stranger rather than someone you’ve vetted and chosen yourself? Disabled people deserve human dignity and choice.

What I want the committee to understand is:

This bill will cause loss of life. I don’t know how else to explain. This bill will cause not just accidentally loss but intentional suicide from disabled participants.

My position on this Bill:

  • I support it
  • I do not support it
  • I have serious concerns

Because: the proposal for this bill has caused distress for disabled people accessing the NDIS. On top of moving through the world as a disabled person, now they have to deal with this added stress. I demand the government withdraw this bill.
