I am a: Disabled person and friend of many people currently on the NDIS

My connection to this issue

I am friends with people on the NDIS, but also friends many people who would like to apply for the NDIS, but due to their disability, do not have the capacity to complete an application.

My overall view of this Bill

I oppose this bill. Instead of looking at the main issue (which is companies taking advantage of the system), this bill takes the easy option of cutting funding to the disabled people, who do not deserve to be attacked.

My main concerns

Loss or reduction of supports and Eligibility or assessment changes

It is scary to think that my friends could lose their funding, just because they may be deemed ‘not disabled enough’. The main reason they may ‘seem able bodied’, is because they lived many years of their lives learning how to live in an able bodied world.

To get onto the NDIS, it took a lot of money and a lot of appointments with medical specialists, who are qualified and are good at what they do, so they know what to look for to make sure no one is ‘faking it’.

Majority of people do not ‘fake it’ to get onto the NDIS. Majority of people do not ‘abuse the system’. Majority of people spend thousands of dollars to actually submit their application, after already spending thousands on diagnoses/medication/other medical expenses.

What I want the committee to understand

I would like the committee to understand that:

  • do not think that ‘more people getting on the NDIS = budget cuts need to happen’. More people are accessing the NDIS because more people are being educated on disability’s, which means more people are realising that they need and deserve access to that support

  • The disabled people should not be targeted, instead the real issues which is the companies that take advantage of the system
  • It cannot be decided who and who isn’t too disabled. Every disabled person is disabled, and deserves the support they need.

My Position on This Bill

I ask that the Government withdraw this Bill
