I would like to share a snippet of my life today as a mum of my son who is an NDIS recipient and as a doctor who works in our health system. My day began as a single parent of three where I woke up preparing all four kids—my two younger children aged twelve and nine plus myself—for school while getting ready too! My fourteen-year-old son has Down syndrome alongside Autism level III; he’s completely dependent upon someone else just basic stuffs such dressing himself or taking care themselves and isn’t able speak at all yet. At six-thirty am support worker arrives here help him get ready his bus ride off to school as start work early hospital seeing patients General Paediatric clinic catch train receive messages from said worker about my son refusing shoes on board or even boarding itself altogether other two smaller siblings tried helping but no luck whatsoever torn do go home abandon work calling sick continue? Plan made backup support workers drive son there instead! Work busy day clinic complex cases meanwhile phone call received from son’s school expressing some concerns regarding same child arrive around five fifteen pm greet support worker met afternoon bus she heads back home cook dinner, bath assist clumsy shave adolescent moustache prepare bedtime read stories loved since young sadness moment connection now perform rituals when was 2 years old Full time job juggles three kids including disabled son grateful for NDIS worry future look like Will be able career once leaves safety schooling environment reliant adult care stretch out week funding support allow beyond school day family others resent me brother needs ignored also certainly more mature than other age by caring their disability. on flipside clinician seen waste of funds unscrupulous providers faction people that NDIS disables further entrenches reliance system designed helps them easy answers changes need made suggestion would involve clinicians access recommendations evidence-based treatments and fund community-led programs screening tool see appropriate self manage NDIS recommend I see people who can’t handle household budget let alone manage money effectively.

Tomorrow is another day. Of speech therapy for my son, to see tricky patients at work day after tomorrow: running two more kids between their football practices.
