To whom it may concern,

My son has Prader Willi Syndrome and relies entirely on the NDIS for his housing, his social supports and his access to his supported workplace. Without it, he would not have the amazing team we have put around him to minimise his extreme anxiety and to keep his dietary support to regulate his weight. His OT support, his Behaviour support, his wonderful NDIS support coordinator, his access to the gym, to equine therapy, his dietician, all rely on his NDIS support.

moved out of a domestic violence situation in a group home and into his villa in a complex of 4 villas with the assistance of NDIS. Without NDIS supports would not survive as he is totally dependant on the assistance he receives.

Aside from this, I am researching for my PhD utilising the findings of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. I am reading every single one of the stories from the 2700 pages of submissions made to the Royal Commission, and it is very clear that good and just access to the NDIS is very important. It also informs me that people with disability have been calling on the loopholes to be closed, that they have been saying for a very long time that there are major issues in the provisions of this scheme. The scheme has been badly abused and people with disability have paid the price of this abuse over and over again. The rhetoric toward people with disability has become unconscionable.

People need better and more and more secure access to the scheme and to have confidence that the support will remain. Removing supports and redirecting funds goes against the recommendations of the Royal Commission and sets back the progress toward implementing these in the worst ways. The scheme is economically viable, and it is shameful to consider cutting access to it. This is especially true if the aim is to fund defence with the savings, as is suggested. This was also the suggestion of Peter Dutton in 2023, that Aukus could be sustained by re-evaluating the NDIS.

I do not understand how it is justifiable, or even thinkable, to further fund defence at the expense of our most vulnerable.

The NDIS is the most amazing innovation, and our country can be proud of its potential. However, much work needs to be done to see that it is good value for money, that it can grow to assist all people who require it, and to see that it is not abused by shoddy and fraudulent providers.
