i thought of one last thing i think is truly relevant, we cant just pack up and move into the nearest city eg adelaide or mildura to access a much larger pool of providers & services because we are a family and SDA housing does not accommodate parents without NDIS plans to live within the home & quite frankly after working within disability advocacy here in SA i would NEVER allow ANY provider that much power over ANOTHER HUMAN BEINGS DAILY LIFE EVER let alone my family.
We were able to live the Australia dream & purchased our first & only home 14 years ago in January 2012 when we were both working even with the value of our home increasing over the years it doesn’t cover the deposit we would need to purchase a 4 bedroom single story wheelchair accessible home that will fits us & our custom made furniture, cars etc
there are no options or any government supports for a family like mine to help with rent other than rent assistance & i wouldn’t know how that even works with 5 adults all on income support living in the same house (the cheapest rentals could find in adelaide was double our current mortgage payments)
to purchase an wheelchair accessible 4 bedroom single story home started at around $900,000 mark & NO ONE is going to give us a mortgage for that much even with around a $200.000 deposit
(i have become an ambulatory wheelchair user & as my multiple chronic health conditions continue to progress i will need to rely mobility supports like a wheelchair more & more)
there’s not even a program to help finance the actual move of a family like ours because when you have lived in the same place for a long time you tend to accumulate a lot of stuff regardless how hard you try not to & it takes us a long time just to pack up to go out for a day let alone pack up to move we would need help & support to physically move our stuff that we have walked in over the years
Not to mention the boys all need a routine & moving would be the biggest change that the boys have ever undertaken, new everything which would take a lot of time & patience to get through for each of us with meltdowns & sensory overloads thrown in sporadically through the entire process. If we won the lotto tomorrow of millions of dollars at our disposal we would still have to find a accessible property, show the boys,

everyone would have to agree on it, then we would have to go through the whole purchasing process win the house, then acclimatize the boys to the new house & surroundings as we slowly move in and move out of our home here in berri which im guessing would take months before we completed the whole transition before we could get some trades into the Berri house to fix it up to an acceptable level & put it on the market to be sold.
