National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment ( Securing the NDIS for Future Generations )Bill 2026 Submitted by :K’s Aunty| May 2026
Who I Am And My Connection To This Bill
I am writing this submission as an auntie of k,a thirteen-year-old girlwith Cri du Chat syndrome—a rare genetic conditionthat causes severe intellectual disability, significant communication delays , complex behaviorsof concernand high physical support needs.K requires one-to-one support in all environmentsfor her own safetyandsafety aroundher.Iam a closeinvolvemember offamily extended family .I seek regularly,I havewatched hergrowcelebratedhersmilestoneattendedfamily events alongside and withsupport workers, and witnessed firsthand boththe extraordinary care her parents provide and critical role thendisplays making their families life liveable.I submitthis because proposed amendments tonidis will directly seriously harm K,hertwoparents, families like theirs across Australia—and do not believe has been made clear enough community or parliamentarians.
What I Have Witnessed As Family Member Attending family gatherings along side khas given meclear view what ndis funded supports actually looks practice—why it matters so much. When khassupport worker present ata family event, something remarkable happens: can be k.If she becomes overwhelmed overstimulatedcan supported take break. Her parentscan prepare food have conversations make sure younger brothers included having good time whole family gets together.Without that support reality very different.k’s two parentsparticularly mum spend entire event state hypervigilance managing behaviour toileting helping communicate monitoring safety trying simultaneously attend totwo children. There is no moment rest adult conversation opportunity simply enjoy being part of the family. Ive seen this, exhausting witness let alone live.Want unequivocal :This luxury This usingfundedsupports participate ordinary rhythmsof family lifemost Australianstake completely granted
My Concerns About Bill Having spoken lengthwith k’ s parents read aboutproposedamendments serious concerns mean for kandfor familie similar hers:
National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 1825
- From October 1st 2026, K’s social, civic & community participation funding will be reduced by half with no consideration given towards individual needs or right-to-appeal. This fund allows ‘K’ access to attend pool sessions alongside long-term care workers; independent time spent among school friends; as well as participating fully within family events described above. Cutting it down significantly won’t save the NDIC; instead, it isolates K further while placing an even greater burden on parents’
- The proposed bill grants Ministers power over any future reduction in NDIS support without explanation oversight nor appeals. For a family who has built their entire life around stability promised under this scheme, such changes are deeply destabilizing. The absence of safety nets if decisions cause real harm is concerning could deny supports virtually every child aged below eighteen regardless complexity permanence disability. Parents already doing everything reasonably asked and more risk being rendered invisible due these provisions. Bill opens door financial co-contribution families operate household income because caregiving demands expecting them bridge gaps unrealistic harmful.
What This Means For Our Family’s Future
- Parents have planned carefully her future dignity genuine inclusion close loving family. NDIS made that feel possible Bill puts serious at risk. As someone loves K genuinely frightened alternatives look like conversations extended network other Cri du Chat communities experienced prospect living group home direction appears pushing toward carries risks abuse neglect Royal Commission into Violence Abuse Neglect Exploitation People with Disability documented detailed not hypothetical. PARENTS will be able to care alone she ages should they too. NDIS exists precisely so families don’t choose between burning out unsafe setting undermining promise.
My Request To the Committee
I ask committee consider human impact amendments abstract lived reality families told NDIC provided certainty planning lives accordingly. K line budget teenager loves swimming finding independence lights up when sees people she loves exactly person designed support urge recommend removal amendments cut participant rights appeal hand
