Dear Committee,

I am writing after reading through information regarding the proposed NDIS changes dand wanting to share a few concerns. Disability has been around me in different ways throughout my life. My mother lives with a disability; Ihavefamily friendswith disabilitiesmy daughter works withinthe disablesector,andalso workedindisablessupport many years ago.Becauseof this,I haveseen enough overthepast yearstoknowhow importanttherightsuppor can be an d impact itcan havesomeone’slife.I understandthat accountabilitywithinthen DIS isimportantan d protectingthesystemfor then futureis necessary.My concernisthether someo f theseproposedchanges could unintentionally create difficultiesf oreoplewhorely ontheses supports everyday.The propos ed chang esaround functional assessments anda frameworkplanningare one area thatstood out tome.Idworry aboutpeoplebecomingto heavily definedbyassessments andcategories.N o two people areexactly th e sameanda ndpeop le’ s needscanchangef romdaytod ayIdonot think support should becomea onesize- fits-allsystem.I also found myself thinkingabout there prop osed change ssurrounding community participationsupports.M any peopl etake for grantedbeing abletoleavehouse, seefriendsparticipateinhobbiesor simplybe involvedinevery daylifethes things maysound smallbutformany peoples they ar ei mportantparts ofmaintaining wellbeingandqualityoffife.Th ep roposed changes around whatisc onsidered“reasonableannecessary”alsoraisedconcernsforme.Familiessupportbecausecareabouthem but everyfamilyhasdifferentpressuresadifferentcapacitiesI do notthink familiesshouldbecomexpectedtotakemoresimply becausetheylove someone. Ialso have concerns surrounding the proposedchange sr elating to eligibility an dtreatment requirements.Health care decisionsaredel ight personalan dwouldnot like toseepo ple feelpressurethatthe needtopursuetreatm ents orinterventions inorder toreceivesupport.Atth endofthed a ybehindeveryproposalandpolicy chang erealpeople andrealf amiliestryingtolive their lives.
