To whom it may concern,

My name is , I am a 20-year-old law and justice student living in Brisbane, I work causally in retail and part-time as a personal injury law clerk as I go into my last year of study. Two of my younger siblings are disabled and on the NDIS.

I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed cuts and changes to the NDIS.

I grew up in regional Queensland. When I was in high school, every night for over 6 months I would run tube feeds for my brother when he was so ill he could not eat or get out of bed. I would teach him his schoolwork; I would help my mum around the house. My brother is now paraplegic.

Because of the NDIS, I was able to move out of home to pursue my dream of studying law. My mum was able to access enough support that she didn’t need me at home to survive. Now, because of this government, I am staring at the prospect of ending my promising legal career before it starts, moving back to regional Queensland to no job, no friends, no educational prospects, no community, so that my mother does not work herself to death caring for my siblings.

This bill is not financial, its personal. This bill will kill people.

To the ministers I ask - Who, out of me and my 5-foot-6 mother are supposed to be manually transferring my adult brother in and out of bed? Who is supposed to break their back trying to lift him? Or maybe my cancer-survivor father should quit his job as a GP providing care to a large regional population so that he can volunteer for that pleasure?

Why is it that you consider my life more valuable than my brothers? Why is it appropriate that I spent taxpayer money through youth allowance on getting a coffee or a haircut or a drink at the pub but my brother isn’t allowed to have a support worker take him to the doctor? Or the shops?

You are NOT saving money by cutting the NDIS, you are moving the spending onto the health system, the aged care system, the school system, the prison system. And in the meantime, you are directly harming not only disabled people, but everyone around them.

The prime minister makes it a point of pride that his mother was on benefits, he was able to succeed in his career and life because his mother was supported by the government. Why am I not allowed that same opportunity? Why is my mother not allowed that same opportunity?

I urge the government to please reconsider these changes, the lives of hundreds of thousands

of Australians depend on it.
