I am a: Clinician and a Supporter, and a Disabled person

  1. My connection to this issue

As a clinician I work with people who are on the NDIS, I have seen the immense positive changes in their lives and also the struggles. I also have the privilege of supporting loved ones who are on the NDIS as well. I am also a disabled person, who is fortunate enough to not be severely disabled enough for the time and energy and effort to get onto the scheme to be worth it.

  1. My overall view of this Bill

Overall I oppose this bill because it takes the individual control for participants away, while also removing so much necessary funding. If there are any issues within the NDIS it is at the fault of the NDIA or companies and corporations earning HUGE profits. I am concerned that the individual participants are being penalised for the harm perpetrated by companies and corporations. I am also concerned that the NDIA has become an institution built on assuming the worst of individual participants.

  1. My main concerns

I am concerned that the changes will make an already complex and difficult system even more inaccessible to participants. As a supporter I have sat with a participant as they have had to compile inordinate amounts of reporting in order to just keep the level of funding that they already have. The labour of time and energy and effort for an already disabled person is cruel.

I am also concerned that the changes are going to severely decrease the quality of life of participants by decreasing their funding for their needs as well as make it impossible for them to be able to engage with the community at all. No human, especially disabled people, should not be socially isolated on top of not having their basic needs for life provided.

I am also concerned that the changes will put an unnecessary and heavy burden onto families. Disabled people are parents, disabled people are partners, disabled people are children. These families deserve the support so they can enjoy being a family together. Becoming disabled can happen to anyone at any time.

4. What I want the committee to understand

I think it is important for the committee to understand is that these changes are going to dramatically and immediately negatively impact hundreds of thousands of humans. And also everyone who loves those humans and the communities they are part of. The circles of negative impact are going to follow throughout communities for decades to come. This will harm all Australian communities.

5. My position on this Bill

I do not support this bill. I do not think this bill should be supported. The function of the government is to care for Australian people. This bill does incredible harm to disabled Australians, all their loved ones, and all their communities. This is going to cause immense harm to all our communities.
