We are extremely worried about government plans to cut funds under the NDIS - a scheme that has enabled our son to overcome barriers, reduce risk and harm and improve his functionality.

My son is at the age where half of his life was spent without support and the other half of his life with NDIS support.

Without doubt, the NDIS is the reason my son has built his functionality, been able to overcome barriers and achieve life and NDIS goals.

Prior to being on the NDIS our son was a very real risk of taking his own life. He spoke about doing so and it was for some time a real concern and worry. Our son has cerebral palsy and prior to the NDIS his focus was on what his body could not do. He would compare himself to his brother and peers and the world around him always seemed to set him up to fail.

Since the NDIS, our son has gone on to achieve things he never thought possible. While he does still suffer from mental health challenges they are more manageable to the point that does not see a psychologist. The NDIS has reversed the trajectory of his life and he is now being set up to succeed.

We are really concerned that his community participation is at risk of being cut as it is the single area that our son has struggled with the most. Our son has a long way to go in feeling he is an equal when in the community but at least he tries to socialise now. He has even had 3 girlfriends which is huge! When younger he never imagined a girl would want to go out with him.

We are really concerned that he will experience cuts in daily living support. Living with Cerebral Palsy is difficult enough without having the supports discontinued – supports that have been a positive part of his life for many years. He is at the age where he is embarrassed to have his parents supporting him. The NDIS is always going on about the continuity of supports and now it is the actual scheme threatening to discontinue supports! We truly fear how we are meant to suddenly go without the supports that have been so important and beneficial for our son. It is beyond cruel.

We are very concerned about the lack of safeguards in the new look NDIS. We are very concerned about the iCAN assessment tool which is extremely inadequate in painting an accurate picture into our son’s disability support needs. We are very concerned about the electronic element to the changes - to put our lives in the hands of a electronically produced plan instils intense fear. Our son is a person with an age and a story and there is no way we trust such an electronic system especially after what has happened in the past with Centrelink.

We lodge our concerns and hope that this is a real process not just one for the sake of it. We do not support this new legislation. We can see these changes costing lives, including putting our son’s life back in jeopardy.
