Submission on the NDIS bill 2026

I have many friends who are using the NDIS as disabled people in the community. The proposed cuts to the NDIS are causing my friends genuine anxiety. The short time frame for the responses to the bill created is unfair for people who need extra supports and time to be able to respond to these things.

I understand that the bill means that many people currently on the scheme would be cut off, potentially 160,000. How do we know that those people are now, magically “able bodied?” I understand that there are changes planned to the issue of permanence in disability. What if those people can’t access the services that other people can, because of where they live, or how much treatment they can afford?

It’s unfair. We should be creating a scheme that fairly deals with people with a disability, not one that makes their life stressful. The scheme is already difficult for people to manage, and these are people who have many more challenges to day to day living than able bodied people, like me, have. I am concerned for the loss of supports for those who will be removed from accessing financial and other supports through these cuts.

If there are issues with support workers and organisations rorting the system and overcharging for their services, as I have heard happens occasionally, it’s those people who should be targeted, not people with disability.

It’s embarrassing that in a country as rich as ours, we target people who are in need of genuine help and make it harder and harder for them to get it.
