Client's improved health through NDIS supports (Participant experience)

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 2622

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to express my concern regarding proposed cuts to the NDIS. Having worked closely with individuals accessing NDIS supports, I have seen firsthand the life-changing impact these services can have. One client I supported was experiencing severe health issues due to long-term alcohol dependence and heavy smoking, with significantly compromised heart and lung function.

Through consistent support made possible by the NDIS, I witnessed remarkable improvements in his wellbeing. He was eventually able to stop drinking alcohol, quit excessive smoking, improve his health, and engage more meaningfully in daily life.

Stories like his demonstrate that the NDIS is not simply a cost—it is an investment in people’s health, independence, and quality of life. Reducing support risks pushing vulnerable Australians backwards, often resulting in greater long-term costs to the healthcare system and community. I urge decision-makers to consider the real human impact of these cuts and to protect the supports that help people live healthier, more independent lives.

Sincerely,
