National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 3430
To the senate
Please consider “reasonable and necessary”
Is it reasonable and necessary for my 26 year old son with down syndrome to hide at home and not be seen, much like the old days where women who bore such children were told to lock their babies in an institution and get on with their lives.
Is it reasonable and necessary for my husband and I stop work and wholly and solely tend to our son and live off government benefits.
Is it reasonable and necessary to be excluded from the day options program with reduced funding that the bill is proposing. What is my 26 year old supposed to do with his day , when the day option program is his only form of normality in his life, connection with other like minded individuals, some form of self worth and sense of belonging.
Is it reasonable and necessary that siblings are supposed to look after their brother and also give up their life to take their brother to appointments to anywhere to shave him, shower him, manage his funds, buy his clothes wash his clothes, buy his food, cook his food, manage his life, his friends, all the while they are supposed to get on with their life. So that is four other people impacted by your decision to reduce funding in reasonable and necessary supports which in turn reduces his opportunities that he has been exposed to, that you are going to rip away from him.
It will be our family that has and will be impacted tremendously by your proposed bill to reduce social and community participation. We rely heavily on this funding you have given us to live a normal life as normal as can be and now you are going to rip that from our family.
You will be putting our son at risk of severe withdrawal and depression and inappropriate behaviours as he will have major melt downs if he is unable to participate in his regular day options and getaways and move toward independent living. How will this now be achieved if we do not have the supports in place?
Do you remember when an adult with down syndrome killed his mother in Adelaide when he did not get his way. Well you may see more of this with your proposed bill. Or the murder suicides around the country of whole families being wiped out due to the extreme stress and financial strain placed on families when funding is cut to day option programs, or supports of any sort.
Has this even been considered or is this what you want to happen-natural attrition of people with disabilities and their families.
We are asking as a family re consider as we are only managing as a family due to the funding and supports facilitated by you the NDIS.

Please consider the thousands of people who need supports every day just to live, to work, to eat, to be safe, to be clean, to be housed, to be Australian.
Thank you for considering and listening.
