Submission on the NDIS Amendment Bill
Name:
I am a: ☐ Disabled person ✅ Family member / supporter ☐ Clinician / worker ☐ Other: ___________________
My main concern about this Bill is:
The proposed pausing or review of funding due to inability to contact the participant.
This Bill may affect me / people I support because:
- My fiance has long periods of non-verbalism associated with their disabilities, namely autism.
- My partner can’t be forced to build their schedule around a call that may or may not come on time due to lacking resources or resource officers.
- I and my partner’s support worker can’t always be around to assist with phone calls that cause heightened anxiety, breakdowns, and in some cases, full verbal and physical shutdown.
- My partner should not be forced to be the “perfect case”. Mental illness and cognitive disabilities such as autism, ADHD, depression, and anxiety, all of which my partner has are messy. They aren’t predictable and if caught at a bad time or in a particularly rough moment can lead to outbursts of frustration, anger and inability to express their needs in a concise, clear manner which under this bill may cause their funding, which they just received after nearly two years of trying to obtain, to be paused, reviewed or cut entirely.
An example of my partner’s disability getting in their way while trying to understand the NDIS in itself has been whilst we were trying to find a provider, the obtuse and indecipherable to the common layperson language used by the NDIS and government in general causing multiple meltdowns. They tried to understand every bit of information being thrown in their face, and when they requested clarification, nothing was given, no reassurance was given to them by anyone but myself in the entire process, not only leaving them feeling stranded, but leaving me to support

them while trying to maintain a cool enough head to help them effectively through the process.
What I want this committee to understand is that if passed, this bill will not only affect people trying to game the system but will affect thousands of already vulnerable Australians. Some of whom will not survive without the support that the NDIS provides. I want the committee to understand that the disabled community not only needs to survive but thrive, they need the ability to do things other than staying shut in and living off of packets of noodles or cans of beans. This bill will effectively destroy that possibility for thousands.
My position on this Bill:
☐ I support it ✅ I do not support it ☐ I have serious concerns
Because: the government doesn’t view the disabled community like humans. They are viewed as subhuman and already treated as such. This bill will make that treatment worse.
