I am a mother of two children, both adults accessing the NDIS since its inception in WA, in
2019.
The NDIS right now for me has been a planning tool for future organising for my children’s lives
and a source of constant stress and fear on a daily basis.
The idea of the NDIS has been admirable, but the delivery, much less so. Since the rollout in
Perth every single past service provider has now become defunct, so there is absolutely no way
back to where we were before the NDIS.
The NDIS needs a major overhaul but NOT at the expense of the Disability Community’s
expense of a better life for all.
I could wrote for hours about being in my shoes for a day or a week, but the only people who
understand that is the Disability Community themselves.
The idea of this submission is to make you aware of the catastrophic impact the proposed
removal of 160,000 people and removing a further 2% each year until 2030 where an
acceptable amount of participants are on the scheme.
Yes the NDIS needs the overhaul but let’s start with the continual waste of money internally
from the scheme itself.
The constant reviews and the repeating of FCA’s that we all know are almost never read.
That being said, let’s focus on the true impact that is hand at the moment.
Removing funds from the Social Economic and Community Participation
Will only alienate the Disability Community further than they already are. The fact that this is
where is starts only tells us that the Government has not put
“ People with Disabilities first “
How do you decide how many hours that someone in the Disability Community, is valued.
What do know of each individuals circumstances are and the best way to provide those social
opputunites ?
I was promised that my children would not be worse off with the rollout of the NDIS.
I was promised we would all be looked after and no one left behind. This promise, sadly has
not been held.
I am not asking for what isn’t " Reasonable and Necessary ",
I understand that term better than most neurotypical people, but to date, I doubt the Delegates
themselves truly understand this terminology.
What I am asking for is for people involved in building plans, in this instance the Delegates, to
be consistent with the decisions made when making plans.
To have discussions with each participant before a plan is made, which had this been in place,
would have actually stopped me having to contest every single plan both my children have
received since 2019. This number sits around 10 reviews and counting so far.
What we are asking for is to be included in the discussions about how a politician can make a
decision based on NO UNDERSTANDING of how people with Disabilities manage their own
lives.
It is not my “ parental role “ to take my adult children to every single social event to access the
community in a way that is meaningful and appropriate.
National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026
Submission 3667
It is not my “ parental role “ to take my adult children to every single drs or specialists appointments while they are adults.
It is not my “ parental role “ to take my adult children to every single therapy appointment while they are adults and they are trying to make better choices within the framework of their own disability.
Can you imagine that if this was the case, how many families would be living on welfare because the amount of time spent doing all these things stopped the parent earning an income.
It is not sustainable to expect parents of Adult children to be doing all of the above mentioned items listed and still have somewhat of a life themselves.
If you were to compare my sons’ life for example to one of his peers, you would find young adults accessing the community because they could drive, they had a job or possibly attending University.
My son can do none of these things, NOT ONE !!!
Trust me, we have tried but for some of these mentioned, it puts his life at risk being a vulnerable person with multiple disabilities. A community is only as strong as its involvement within the community. This is the same for the Disability Community.
These proposed changes would dramatically change the lives of both my children and not in a positive light at all. To even consider that SECP should be reduced or is come cases completely removed is shocking to say the least.
The Disability Community is reliant on support workers to encourage and foster friendships outside of the families main core. This is how SECP works. The support staff are fundamental in helping participants of the NDIS to access the community by not just having a coffee but seeing drs, making hospital visits, attending therapy sessions, paying bills and buying food. You know, the really important stuff…
Personally, without the 9/10 support workers that my son has direct contact with each week through his SECP funding, I would probably have been admitted to Graylands myself many years ago as a single Mum of 3.
The NDIS was designed for people with Disabilities that have a profound intellectual and /or physical disability . People with Disabilities continue to be born each year and it is growing. The removal of 160000 off the scheme and continuing to “trim it down “ is akin to a genocide against people with Disabilities .
Please listen to what the Disability Communities are asking, begging and imploring of you. To make these fast and uninformed decisions base on a few bad apples is not justice or equality for people with disabilities. We cannot and will not accept this proposal for the cuts to the NDIS as you would not accept cuts to your own Health Fund or Medicare without prior consultation with many Ministers, I’m sure.
Please consider this submission from a Mother of 3, 2 who are on the NDIS and have had an oppurtunity to have a better life, better than I could have given them without any assistance from the NDIS if I am going to be completely honest.
