Submission to fight against the proposed new law for the NDIS called the ‘securing the NDIS for Future generations bill’.

I write as a Grandparent to an autistic, ADHD, PDA 8 year old. I see how difficult everyday life is for my son and his family. It is incredibly difficult and the support provided to them via the NDIS is vital. I urge you not to pass this bill but to address the overcharging, etc by some providers which is the real problem and which you say the bill will address – although it doesn’t.

These proposed new laws don’t secure the future of NDIS, they instead end the NDIS as we know it and replace it with a very different system of disability support. The NDIS, as it is now, is a real boon for those with a disability and their carers and means many can contribute to the community and economy in ways they otherwise would not be able to.

These proposed laws would have such negative impact on my Granddaughter, her family and any Australian living with a disability.

The proposed laws would:

  • Remove reasonable and necessary supports and individualized planning for my Grand granddaughter. My Grand daughter is unique in her struggles and relies heavily on support based on her particular needs. There have been some therapies that have been helpful and others that have not been so helpful - it is a constant reassessment of her needs and supports that are suitable for her.

  • Reduce the choice and control over her supports which is worrying. It has taken them many years to find the right supports for my grand daughter. They have had to trial many different supports to find the right ones that help her feel safe and that work in a neuro affirming way that reduces harm. If they/my grand daughter are not given choice over supports, this will lead to harm and cause my grand daughter to shut down, burn out and regress in every way possible.

  • Make it possible for many disabled people to be removed from the NDIS. My grand daughter has a significant and permanent disability - she requires significant support from various therapies such as OT, psychologist and Speech therapist. These therapies help support my grand daughter so that she can access life in the best way she can. If she were to be removed from the NIDS, they would

  • not be able to afford the level of therapy she
  • needs. If my Granddaughter were to be removed
  • from the NDIS, she would not get the therapy she
  • needs and deserves and which is likely to lead to
  • her being a productive member of the community,
  • thus saving ongoing costs.

Overall, I am very concerned at what these proposed laws and funding cuts will mean for our family. They didn’t ask for a child with a disability, she didn’t ask for a disability. None of this is their fault so why do I feel like they are going to be punished because of these proposed changes?

The government want to target fraud and say they will be cutting off 160,000 participants, although others have assessed this as a higher number. This is not targeting fraud; it is targeting people with a disability. It is targeting people that already find the world so disabling and inaccessible.

I understand there are issues with the NDIS that need to be looked out – I have experienced first-hand Providers doing the wrong thing with regards to NDIS however these proposed laws are not at all targeting these providers, they are targeting my Granddaughter and families like mine who are just barely keeping their head above water.

I urge you strongly not to pass this bill. It disadvantages disabled people. It disadvantages the carers and families of disabled people. Life is already intolerable and grueling. Why would you make it worse?
