National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 3759

To Whom It May Concern,

I am mum to a 32 year man who lives with a significant intellectual disability, is autistic and has epilepsy.

Due to his disability he requires assistance in all areas of his life including self- management, self care, social interaction and communication. He requires assistance doing daily tasks such as cleaning, cooking, shopping, laundry, reading and finances just to name a few.

With his support workers he is able to access community and experience life somewhat like his peers.

They take him to various appointments including medical, dental and haircut appointments and usually includes a coffee every week.

He is also supported doing a mowing round each week which is so important to him as he feels valued and productive.

The support workers also assist and interpret daily communications when my son does not understand what has happened or been said to him

This did not happen before the NDIS, so we are eternally grateful for this scheme and want it to continue.

Since the “Cuts” to his NDIS plan, my son’s mental health has deteriorated.

He does not understand why he cannot see his support people and do the things he did before the “cuts” and his anxiety has heightened.

This will only get worse if things continue in this direction.

I am getting older and my husband has been diagnosed with a chronic illness and is no longer able to assist with the informal care that is expected of parents.
