Protecting post-school supports for people with profound disability

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 3828

DO NOT CUT COMMUNITY ACCESS FUNDING

When I was 17 years old, and about to do my HSC trials, I addressed the NSW Legislative Assembly General Purpose Standing Committee No. 2 regarding the uncertainty of my brother’s future due to a lack of supports and funding for post-school life of young adults with disability. The truth of what I said brought committee members to tears.

It fills me with fury, and sorrow, to be making almost the same appeal more than two decades later – and at a federal level, no less.

Shame on you.

Please refer to the address I made to the NSW Legislative Assembly standing committee for the inquiry into state post-school program funding (17TH May, 2005). Specifically, I would like to draw your attention to my closing statement:

“Denying people basic rights to a life of their own is criminal, and it makes me very angry. I’m so angry that, due to these funding cuts, redacted’s future as well as the futures of many others in this community will be restricted to sitting in front of a square box.”

Should the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026 be passed, this exact outcome will come to fruition for my brother and all the others whose futures were being fought for by the people who addressed that NSW Legislative Assembly committee more than 20 years ago. Already, members of the redacted community who live with profound disability have had their NDIS plans either halved or severely cut down. I will fight this happening to my brother, and we will rally against it happening to a single other person.

Do better. We are watching.

I WELCOME THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THE COMMITTEE DIRECTLY, REGARDING THIS MATTER.
