Support for a daughter with severe cerebral palsy

National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026

Submission 4084

Committee Secretary, The Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs, Parliament House, Canberra. 30 May, 2026

We wish to state our concerns at the new legislation which will dramatically change the National Disability Insurance Scheme. We support the improved compliance measures announced in the Federal Budget to control fraud and waste, but as the parents and grandparents of disabled children (now adults) we are gravely worried for the welfare of our families Currently one member of our family, now aged 47, lives with severe cerebral palsy. The NDIS is essential for her to be able to live independently from us, her parents, now in our 80’s, with 24 hour care. This has relieved us of a great deal of anxiety and worry and gives her independence and dignity. We are concerned that any changes in the legislation will mean a lower standard of living and care for our daughter. Up till now, after years of personally caring for her, we have been able to relax, knowing that her standard of care will continue. Our daughter’s life has been enriched by the NDIS and it is essential that this continues at the present level. We are grateful for the support that our daughter (and we) have received. If the NDIS is cut as proposed, we are concerned that our daughter will suffer if she loses her present level of support. She will always need this high level of support to lead a meaningful, dignified and safe life. As this is now under threat, with the proposed changes, we are asking for a Disability system that lasts and works for those needing it.

Yours sincerely,
