FOI Request 20/21-0736: Statistics related to NDIS participants in NSW prisons as at 30 April 2021

Our Reference: Response to FOI 20/21-0736

Scope

  1. How many NDIS participants are in NSW prisons?
  2. The average supports the NDIA have funded for people in NSW prisons
  3. How many $1 or $0 plans are active for people in NSW prisons
  4. What NDIS Providers are currently operating in/making assessments for NSW prisons?

Response

The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Communities and Justice provides information to the NDIA regarding current and prospective participants in NSW prisons. The data below is reflective of a point in time, noting that people move in and out of prisons (including remand) daily.

While every reasonable attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of the data below, circumstances change daily and there may be a delay in reporting relevant information to the NDIA and/or circumstances that the NDIA is not informed of.

The following data reflects the latest plan information for the participant circumstances that the Agency has been notified of as at 30 April 2021:

Question Response
1. Total number of active participants in NSW prisons* 374
2. Average plan budget of active participants in NSW prisons $ 79,313
3. Total number of $0 or $1 plans for participants in NSW prisons** 5
4. What NDIS providers are currently operating in NSW prisons? The NDIA does not monitor providers who go into prisons to work with NDIS participants as these providers are procured by a participant’s support coordinator and/or representative(s), and not directly by the NDIA.

*The number of active participants has been provided; there are other participants that have met access that do not have a plan yet and are therefore not active.

**The practice of $0 or $1 plans is being phased out.
